5 Misconceptions about Mini Sessions

Mini sessions are one of the most popular offerings in the photography world, but they’re also one of the most misunderstood. Many clients have questions—or even assumptions—about what mini sessions actually entail, how they differ from full-length sessions, and what to expect. So in this blog post, I’ll be breaking down any misunderstandings about what they are, what they aren’t, plus 5 common misconceptions around mini sessions.

What they Are

As they grew in popularity, photographers widely adopted the term “mini session” to describe shorter, more affordable sessions they would offer—often back-to-back at one location, and tied to a holiday or seasonal theme. Typically lasting 10–30 minutes, mini sessions are designed for efficiency, providing a limited number of edited images at a lower price point, making professional photography more accessible. The holiday season especially (fall and Christmas) helped this trend explode, as we’ve seen clients seek out quick, affordable family photos for gifts and cards. So if you’re looking for professional snaps for your holiday cards, if this is your first ever professional shoot, or if you’re trying out a new photographer, mini sessions are perfect for you.

And despite some common misconceptions about mini sessions, they are some of my favorites to photograph. The short-and-sweet timeframe still leaves plenty of room for authentic smiles, genuine laughter, and candid moments, but the accelerated timeframe pushes me to think creatively while I quickly catch every moment that makes a memory.

What they Aren’t

Mini sessions are not a full photography session, and they were never meant to replace the standard session. Mini sessions are a “taste” of what a full session would be like with the photographer you booked. Also, clients often book their mini session expecting to get the same amount of photos they would have from a full session. And while you’d be surprised how many final photos you can come away with in a mini session gallery, the amount of photos included in the price of a mini session is much less than the amount included in a 1-hour session. Hence, why they cost less. But like with any of my sessions, you can always purchase more photos from your gallery after the fact.

Common Misconceptions

Now we know what a mini session is (and isn’t), let’s talk about some common misconceptions surrounding the widely popular “mini session”.

mini sessions

Myth #1 – Mini sessions are lower-quality than full sessions

One big misconception about mini sessions is that they’re “lesser than” a full session. Photography is my craft, and I pour my heart into every single photo I take. The quality of your photographs means just as much to me as it does to you. Each mini session gallery receives the same level of professional care and attention to detail as my full sessions do–but with a smaller investment in both your time and your dollars.

Myth #2 – Mini sessions are rushed and stressful

If you book a mini session with me, come prepared to have a good time! Mini sessions don’t have to feel rushed or stressful, and it won’t take much time to warm up to the camera. My job as your photographer is to guide you through relaxed, natural poses so you feel comfortable – all while creating fun and beautiful memories in the process. (And if you happen to be a family with young children, 20 minutes of running and wrangling may feel like an eternity!)

Myth #3 – You won’t get enough photos

Some people worry they won’t get enough images in such a short amount of time. If you’re picturing me posing everyone to “say cheese” once for the camera and then sending you off, you’d be wrong. We’ll explore the location, have fun, and by the end of the session, you’ll be surprised how many gorgeous, candid moments I can capture in just 20 minutes’ time. I can promise you this: you will walk away with a thoughtfully curated gallery, ready for sharing and printing just as you would with a full 1-hour session.

Myth #4 – They’re only for families with children

This is one of the most limiting misconceptions about mini sessions – that they’re only meant for families. All are welcome! Minis aren’t just photos for holiday cards (though they can be!). They are perfect for couples, grandparents, friends, even individuals – anyone who wants beautiful photos for any reason. Think anniversaries, maternity, graduation, portraits… there’s no wrong reason to book a mini session.

Myth #5 – Mini sessions are not dynamic

One last misconception about mini sessions that I feel is important to touch on is how dynamic they can be. Minis are designed to be simple and efficient, so while they don’t allow for outfit changes or multiple locations, the backdrop will never be the same in every photo. I get you moving, walking, dancing around the location so your photos won’t fall flat. (If your vision requires something more custom or diverse, my full portrait sessions are the perfect opportunity to collaborate and make your vision come to life.)

Thinking a mini session sounds like what you’re looking for? I’d love to see you at my next one! Be sure to follow me on Instagram and keep an eye out for when new mini session dates are announced.

"We were both so excited and nervous about getting our pictures taken. Brittany was amazing at helping us relax and kept us laughing the whole time, and that is where the magic was made. Brittany really took the time to get to know our style and be sure she was getting all the shots that we wanted!"
