Eloping in Ireland: A Haven for Adventurous Hearts

Are you dreaming of an elopement that feels ethereal and other-worldy? Famous for its dramatic cliffs, ancient castles, and lush green landscapes, Ireland is one of the most enchanting destinations in the world for couples looking to celebrate their love in a private, adventurous, and uniquely memorable way. As an elopement photographer, here’s my guide to eloping in Ireland – plus tips for getting your perfect photographs!

Why Choose Ireland for Your Elopement?

Natural beauty

From the iconic Cliffs of Moher to mystical forests and rugged coastlines, Ireland offers endless jaw-dropping backdrops for your vows, and for your memories.

Rich history

Ireland is known for its historic richness and abundance of castles, abbeys, and quaint villages full of romance and character.

Adventure and intimacy

Enjoy a meaningful experience with just you and your partner, focusing truly on each other and the adventurous spirit you share.

Flexible ceremonies

If your heart is set on an international elopement, it’s not as complicated as you might think. Many couples opt for symbolic ceremonies set in Ireland, after taking care of legalities at home for ease and flexibility.

Top Locations to Elope in Ireland

Here are some of the most celebrated places to consider as the stunning backdrop to your intimate ceremony.

Killarney National Park

Ireland destination wedding photographer

With its 25,000 acres of lakes, ancient ruins, mountain passes, and iconic scenic spots (like Muckross Abbey and the Gap of Dunloe), Killarney National Park is a favorite of those seeking a destination wedding in the Irish countryside.

Cliffs of Moher

Eloping in Ireland

The Cliff of Moher are easily Ireland’s most famous vista, offering epic ocean views and dramatic cliff photos. I can’t think of anything more dramatic and romantic than saying “I do” at the edge of a cliff.

Dingle Peninsula

Eloping in Ireland

Winding coastal roads, wild beaches, and wind-swept hills will have you captivated in every photograph from your intimate Ireland elopement.

Dunluce & Doonagore Castles

Robert’s Cove (Cork)

Robert’s Cove is a quaint and quiet village in County Cork that offers a picturesque bay and woods for total privacy and water-side elopement photos.

When Is the Best Time for Eloping in Ireland?

  • Shoulder seasons (April-May, September-October): Consider traveling in the off-season months, as they typically offer fewer crowds, mild weather, wildflowers, and lower travel costs.
  • May-June: Early summer is also recommended for pleasant temperatures and avoiding the largest tourist surge.

PRO-TIP: Layer up. No matter when you decide to go, weather can be unpredictable, especially on coasts and cliffs. Plan to dress in layers, pack waterproofs, and embrace the unpredictable adventure that awaits!

Legally Eloping in Ireland

If you want to legally get married in Ireland, you need to notify the Registrar at least 3 months before your wedding, in person. But to save you the stress, most couples choose a symbolic ceremony in Ireland after legally marrying in their home country to keep things simple.

What to Wear for Your Irish Elopement

Destination wedding photography
  • Dress: Consider a more lightweight gown (lace is ideal), avoiding bulky or long trains for mobility. This way, it will be easy to pack and change on location.
  • Shoes: Sturdy hiking boots or wellies are recommended for traveling and trecking to your destination. Simply swap your fancy shoes at each photo spot. Comfort and weather-readiness are key!
  • Suit: Wool or tweed is stylish and practical; keep it comfortable for moving through wild landscapes.

Tips for a Stress-Free Elopement (and Incredible Photos!)

Eloping in Ireland can feel overwhelming, and much like a leap of faith when there are so many unknowns and “sight unseens”. For smooth sailing and a fun planning process, here’s my tried and tested advice:

  • A trustworthy elopement service is invaluable, helping with planning, vendors, permits, and recommendations. My elopement package includes all of these services—from helping you find the right location, to planning the perfect timeline, and offering itinerary suggestions for a vacation experience—all for a seamless and stress-free experience.
  • Look for photographers who invest in your vision, make you feel at ease, and create a warm, supportive atmosphere for your big day. Having a photographer you feel comfortable around is absolutely key.
  • Though I always recommend meeting your chosen photographer in-person and shooting your engagement session with them if possible, hiring a local photographer could be helpful, having a knowledgeable guide recommend scenic spots and other talented vendors (if you need them).
  • Embrace spontaneity and uncertain weather. Some of the most beautiful moments I’ve captured are completely candid, wildly windblown, and joyously real.

"We were both so excited and nervous about getting our pictures taken. Brittany was amazing at helping us relax and kept us laughing the whole time, and that is where the magic was made. Brittany really took the time to get to know our style and be sure she was getting all the shots that we wanted!"
