Thinking of Eloping? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Eloping is an intimate, personal way to marry your partner without the stress or pressure of a traditional wedding. If you value simplicity and privacy, and love the idea of creating your own unique experience, eloping might be the right thing for you. If you’re considering eloping, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from planning to saying “I do.”

Know Your Why

Before diving into logistics, take some time to reflect on why you want to elope. Is it the desire for a quiet ceremony in a meaningful place? A rejection of traditional wedding norms? A chance to spend more on an unforgettable experience rather than on a big celebration? Understanding your motivation will guide your decision-making, and you’ll keep coming back to this if planning gets stressful or if family members express a lack of support.

Set a Date

One of the beauties of eloping is that you don’t have to plan years in advance, but it’s still important to pick a date that works for both of you. Consider the season, climate, and any significant dates that might be meaningful (or easier for travel). Keep in mind that some places may require you to apply for permits months in advance.

Choose Your Ideal Location

Elopements offer the freedom to marry almost anywhere, so selecting the perfect spot is key. Some popular elopement destinations include:

Nature-based locations

Mountains, beaches, forests, deserts, and lakes.

Travel destinations

Famous cities, quaint villages, or dream vacation spots.

At home

A private backyard, living room, or a favorite local park.

Consider your personalities, your values, and the type of scenery that speaks to you. If you’re not familiar with the area, research local permits or restrictions.

Legal Requirements

Regardless of where you elope, getting legally married requires a marriage license. The requirements vary depending on location, so make sure to research your destination’s marriage laws (some places have residency requirements). Apply for your marriage license ahead of time (often a few days to a few weeks). If you’re traveling internationally, make sure you understand the country’s legal process. Also, make sure you understand whether you need an officiant and/or witnesses.

Decide Who Will Attend (or Not)

Elopements can be an intimate affair, often with only the couple present, but if you’d like to invite a few people, it’s up to you. Common attendees may include:

  • A small group of family or friends
  • An officiant
  • Photographer or videographer

Let your guests know well in advance, and make it clear that you’re opting for a small ceremony to avoid hurt feelings. You may also want to consider the logistics of travel if you’re inviting others.

Hire Vendors (If Needed)

Depending on your elopement vision, you may want to hire certain vendors to make your day even more special:

Officiant

Some elopements require an officiant (or celebrant), while others allow the couple to self-solemnize.

Photographer

Capturing the moment is essential, so a photographer is a must (I swear I’m not biased).

Hair and makeup artist

If you want to feel extra glamorous, a professional stylist can help you look and feel your best.

Florist

A bouquet or boutonniere can add beauty to the occasion.

Videographer

Record the day with a video for memories to look back on.

Planning Your Ceremony

Since an elopement is personal, your ceremony can be tailored to your style. Consider the following:

Vows

Will you write your own vows, or will the officiant guide you through traditional vows?

Readings and Rituals

Do you want to include any unique elements such as readings, candle lighting, or exchanging gifts?

Location Setup

If you’re eloping in nature, consider whether you’ll need seating, decorations, or a specific setup. Keep it simple, or make it as unique and meaningful as you want.

Planning Travel and Accommodation

If your elopement is a destination event, logistics are important. Consider:

Travel arrangements

Flights, road trips, car rentals.

Accommodation

Where you’ll stay before and after the ceremony.

Food and celebration

Will you dine out at a restaurant, have a private chef, or picnic on the beach? Think about where you’ll celebrate afterward.

Ensure you have everything booked well in advance, especially if you’re traveling to a remote or popular location.

Hire an Elopement Photographer or Videographer

Hiring a photographer or videographer who specializes in elopements can make all the difference in how you relive the day. Choose someone who aligns with your style and who will make you feel comfortable (whether that’s me or not). But if we are a good fit, I have a package tailored specifically for intimate, destination elopements.

"We were both so excited and nervous about getting our pictures taken. Brittany was amazing at helping us relax and kept us laughing the whole time, and that is where the magic was made. Brittany really took the time to get to know our style and be sure she was getting all the shots that we wanted!"
